Scientific Name: Helianthus annuus
Common Name: Sunflower Shoots / Sunflower Microgreens
Exposure: Bright indirect light to full sun for strongest growth
Height: 4 to 8 inches at microgreen maturity
Width: 1 to 2 inches per plant when grown densely in trays
Spacing: Very dense sowing; seeds typically spread shoulder-to-shoulder across the tray surface (approximately 10–15 seeds per square inch)
Attracts: Not applicable for microgreens; full-size sunflowers attract bees and beneficial insects
Use: Microgreens, edible shoots, salads, sandwiches and garnish
Plant Habit: Fast-growing annual
Harvest: 7 to 12 days, ideally when the first leaves (cotyledons) are fully open and before the second true leaves appear
Companion Plants: Grows well alongside other microgreens such as pea shoots, radish, broccoli, and clover; in the garden, sunflowers pair well with cucumbers, squash, and corn
General Information: Mumm’s Organic Sunflower Shoots are grown primarily as microgreens and produce thick, crunchy, nutty-flavoured shoots. Seeds require soaking for 8–12 hours and benefit from a weighted “dark period” for improved germination and strong stems. Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged. Harvest by cutting just above the soil line. For best quality, avoid growing in overly warm or humid environments, which can encourage mold.
