Deciduous Shrub FAQ'S

What are deciduous shrubs?

Deciduous shrubs are woody plants that shed their leaves each fall and regrow them in spring. They add seasonal interest with flowers, foliage colour, berries, or structure.

How do I prune deciduous shrubs?

Pruning depends on the flowering time. Shrubs that bloom in spring (like lilacs) should be pruned right after flowering. Summer or fall bloomers (like hydrangeas) are usually pruned in early spring.

Do they need winter protection?

Most hardy deciduous shrubs don’t need much winter care beyond a layer of mulch to insulate the roots. Protect young shrubs from heavy snow loads or animal damage if needed.
