Vine FAQ'S

What’s the difference between perennial and fruiting vines?

Perennial vines return each year and are grown mainly for flowers, foliage, or coverage (like clematis or Virginia creeper).

Fruiting vines (like grapes or hardy kiwis) also come back yearly but produce edible harvests.

Do vines need a support structure?

Yes, most vines need trellises, arbors, fences, or pergolas to climb. Some twine around supports (like honeysuckle), while others use tendrils or aerial roots (like climbing hydrangea or grapes), so choose a support that suits the vine’s growth habit.

How do I prune and maintain them?

Pruning depends on the type. Clematis, for example, has different pruning groups based on bloom time. Grapes are pruned heavily in late winter to encourage fruiting. Regular maintenance includes tying new growth, removing dead stems, and occasional feeding.
