Renowned for its mildly sweet flavour and ultra-crispy texture, Little Gem is one of the earliest cos varieties to mature - often in as little as 8 weeks! This mini lettuce is resistant to common pests and diseases and, like other cos types, is nicely heat-tolerant. An ideal variety for successive sowings from spring through fall, Little Gem is a perfect choice for Caesar salads and a truly convenient and rewarding crop.
- Type: Open Pollinated, Romaine/Cos
- Maturity: 8 weeks
- Fruit: Mini-sized heads
- Features: Mildly sweet flavour; ultra-crispy texture; early maturing; pest and heat tolerant.
Romaine lettuce is a nutrient-dense powerhouse. It is an excellent source of Vitamins A and K, as well as a very good source of Vitamin C and Folate. This lettuce also provides dietary fibre and minerals such as iron, making it a highly nutritious and refreshing addition to your diet.
- Sowing: Sow as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, then every two weeks thereafter, to ensure a continuous supply. Sow about 3 mm deep in rows 45 cm apart.
- Care: Lettuce is a sun-loving, cool-weather crop that grows best in organic, well-drained soil. Gradually thin seedlings to 15 cm apart. An even supply of moisture during the entire growth period is imperative for success.
- Harvesting: Harvest by cutting the head off at the base just below the lower leaves. Once the lettuce bolts (starts to produce a rapidly growing flower stem), the leaves become bitter.
- Germination: Germination occurs in 7-10 days.
For a lettuce that is both convenient and exceptional, Little Gem is a perfect choice. Its quick maturity means you can enjoy fresh, crisp salads in a hurry, while its compact size is ideal for small gardens. With a flavour and crunch that are second to none, this variety is a must-have for any home gardener, especially if you love a classic Caesar.
