A beautiful heirloom variety, Michihli Cabbage produces a tall, tapered head with dark green exterior leaves that hide a solid interior of beautifully blanched, spicy-tasting leaves. With a crisp, tender texture, this unique cabbage is best grown as a late summer and fall crop to achieve its distinct characteristics.
- Type: Heirloom Vegetable, Open Pollinated
- Head Size: 45 cm high, 10 cm in diameter, tapered
- Features: Blanched, spicy-tasting leaves; crisp and tender texture; best grown as a late summer/fall crop.
For the best results, Michihli is a long-season crop that is best grown late summer into fall.
Planting: Sow seed indoors in a soilless mix 5 weeks before last frost date. Sow seeds 6 mm deep and keep at 20°C for the 7-10 day germination period. Grow on at a slightly cooler temperature, then harden off and plant outside in late May. Note that spring-to-summer crops will not form dense heads. For best results, sow seeds in mid-summer for fall harvests.
Care: Space plants 45 cm apart in rows with the rows 75 cm apart. The optimum growing conditions are cool days (12-21°C) with cool to cold nights (4-10°C).
The Michihli Cabbage is a standout choice for gardeners looking for a unique and flavourful vegetable. Its tall, tapered head and spicy, blanched leaves offer a crisp texture that is perfect for salads, and a variety of culinary creations. By growing it as a fall crop, you can extend your harvest season and enjoy a delicious and beautiful vegetable as the weather cools. This heirloom adds both a unique form and an exciting flavour to your garden.
