Add a dramatic splash of colour to Your Garden with our Bull’s Blood Beet seeds. This heirloom variety, introduced in 1840, is a dual-purpose crop known for its strong, deep red tops that add a colourful zest to salads. The globe-shaped roots have an intriguing red and white zoning and a clean, crisp flavour.

  • Type: Heirloom Vegetable, Root/Greens
  • Root Size: 5-7.5 cm diameter, globe-shaped
  • Features: Striking deep red tops; intriguing red/white zoned roots; clean, crisp flavour; edible tops and roots.

Beets thrive in sandy loam with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.

Planting: For a continuous harvest, sow seeds 1.2 cm deep and 2.5 cm apart in two-week intervals, beginning when the soil has warmed to 7°C. Avoid sowing after mid-July. Germination occurs in 7-10 days.

Care: As each beet ‘seed’ contains 2 to 5 seeds within, it is important to thin the young seedlings to 7–10 cm apart to allow for proper root formation. The thinned plants can be used as a source of tender, edible greens. Remember to fertilize. Over-watering or excessive rainfall may lead to excessive leaf growth and small roots. One packet sows approximately 6 m of row.

Bull’s Blood is a standout variety for its exceptional beauty and versatility. The vibrant, deep red tops are a beautiful and edible addition to the garden, while the roots, with their unique internal zoning, are a feast for the eyes and the palate. Harvest the roots when they are smaller for the ultimate in flavour and texture. This heirloom offers both a visually stunning plant and a delicious, dual-purpose crop for salads and cooked dishes.
