Thimbleweed (Anemone virginiana) is a great spring plant with delicate white and yellow flowers. After flowering, the seed heads add a lot of personality to the garden. They resemble elongated thimbles that persist into the winter.
Cold, moist stratification is required. Mix seeds with moist substrate (vermiculite, perlite or moss) and place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 6-8 weeks. Sow seed at 1/8 inch depth. Do not let seedlings dry out while they are establishing.
OR
Sow directly outdoors in late fall to overwinter.
