Ilex mucronate
Mountain holly is a deciduous shrub native to northeastern North America. It has slender branches, glossy green leaves, and small white flowers followed by bright red berries. Despite its common name, it is not a true holly (Ilex).
Approximate Maximum Height: Up to 3 m
Zone(s): Zone 3-6
Lighting: Prefers partial shade to full shade, especially in warmer climates. It can tolerate some morning sun but benefits from protection from strong afternoon sunlight.
Germination: Seeds generally require cold, moist stratification to break dormancy. Sow in a moist, well-draining growing medium and keep cool for several months before allowing them to germinate. Germination can be slow and irregular.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, particularly during germination and establishment. Once established, water during dry periods, as mountain holly naturally prefers moist woodland conditions.
