Fraxinus pennsylvanica
Green Ash is a fast-growing, hardy native North American tree known for its attractive compound foliage, adaptable nature, and yellow autumn colour. It is well suited to moist landscapes, naturalized areas, and wildlife plantings and provides valuable habitat and food for birds.
Approximate Maximum Height: 15 m
Zone(s): Zone 2-8
About the Seeds: In Pods
Lighting: Full sun to partial shade. Green Ash grows best in full sun, although young seedlings can establish successfully in moderate shade.
Germination: Green Ash seeds have dormancy and require cold stratification for reliable germination. For northern seed sources, a warm stratification period of approximately 16 weeks at 20°C (68°F), followed by approximately 16 weeks of cold stratification at 3-5°C (37-41°F), is recommended. Fall sowing outdoors can also provide natural stratification. Germination occurs when temperatures rise in spring.
Watering: Keep the seed-starting medium consistently moist but not waterlogged during stratification and germination. Once seedlings emerge, maintain even moisture and do not allow young plants to dry out. Green Ash naturally prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate occasional wet or dry conditions once established.
