Prunus serotina
Black Cherry is a native North American tree known for its clusters of fragrant white spring flowers, dark red to nearly black cherries, and distinctive dark, scaly bark. It is a fast-growing tree that provides valuable food and habitat for birds and other wildlife and is also highly valued for its attractive hardwood.
Approximate Maximum Height: 30 m
Zone(s): Zone 4a-7b
Lighting: Full sun to partial shade. Black Cherry grows best in full sun, although young seedlings can tolerate shade. Good light encourages stronger growth and development.
Germination: Black Cherry seeds have a deep dormancy and require a period of after-ripening and cold, moist stratification before germination. Seeds can be cold-stratified in a moist medium before sowing. Germination may be slow and irregular, with seeds from one crop capable of germinating over several years. A moist seedbed is important for successful germination.
Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged during stratification and germination. Once seedlings emerge, maintain even moisture and do not allow young seedlings to dry out. A moist, well-drained growing medium is ideal for establishing young Black Cherry plants.
