Ulmus americana

American Elm is a large, graceful, native North American tree known for its classic vase-shaped crown, arching branches, and attractive green foliage. It is a valuable native tree for wildlife and naturalized landscapes and can become a majestic shade tree when given adequate growing space.

Approximate Maximum Height: 40 m
Zone(s): Zone 2-8

Lighting: Full sun to partial shade. Young seedlings perform well with some shade during their first year, while established trees grow best in full sun.

Germination: American Elm seeds usually germinate soon after they mature and do not normally require stratification. Sow fresh seeds in a moist, well-drained growing medium. Germination generally occurs within 6–12 days, although it can continue for up to 60 days. If seeds have entered dormancy, approximately 60 days of cold, moist stratification at about 5°C (41°F) can help overcome dormancy. Germination is improved by warm temperatures and light.

Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination. Once seedlings emerge, maintain even moisture and do not allow them to dry out. Young American Elm seedlings grow best in moist soil with good drainage.
