Juniperus communis
Common juniper is a hardy, evergreen conifer that ranges from a low, spreading shrub to an upright small tree. It has prickly, blue-green, needle-like foliage and produces small blue-purple berry-like cones. It is excellent for naturalized areas, rock gardens, and wildlife habitat.
Approximate Maximum Height: 3 m
About the Seed: Clean
Zone(s): Zone 2-7
Lighting: Full sun is best. It can tolerate light partial shade, but dense shade may result in weaker, less attractive growth.
Germination: Seeds have deep dormancy and can be slow to germinate. They typically benefit from warm stratification followed by cold stratification. Keep seeds moist and warm for about 2-3 months, followed by about 3-4 months of cold stratification at 1-5°C (34-41°F). Sow approximately 0.5-1 cm deep in a well-draining medium. Germination can be irregular.
Watering: Water regularly while young to keep the soil moderately moist. Once established, common juniper is drought-tolerant and generally requires only occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
