Betula alleghaniensis
Yellow Birch is a beautiful, long-lived native North American tree known for its golden-bronze bark, aromatic twigs, and attractive yellow autumn foliage. It is well suited to cool, moist woodland settings and is an excellent choice for naturalized landscapes and native plantings.
Lighting: Partial shade to full sun. Young seedlings perform well with moderate shade, while established trees benefit from increased light. Approximately 45-50% of full sunlight provides favourable conditions for young seedling growth.
Germination: Yellow Birch seeds have natural dormancy and require moist cold stratification for reliable germination. Place seeds in moist peat, sand, or vermiculite and refrigerate at approximately 5°C (41°F) for 4-8 weeks. After stratification, sow the seeds on or very close to the soil surface, as light is important for germination. Germination generally occurs over several weeks under suitable conditions.
Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged throughout stratification and germination. Yellow Birch requires adequate moisture for successful seedling establishment, and young seedlings should not be allowed to dry out.
