Common Name: Early Scarlet Globe Radish
Scientific Name: Raphanus sativus
Life Cycle: Annual
Description Detail: A classic, fast-growing radish producing bright scarlet-red, round roots with crisp white flesh and a fresh, mildly peppery flavour. Its quick maturity makes it an excellent choice for early spring planting and succession sowing throughout the growing season.
Days to Germinate: 5-10 days
Bloom / Harvest: Approximately 22–28 days to maturity. Harvest when roots reach their desired size, before they become woody or overly hot.
Germination Needs: Sow seeds approximately 6-12 mm (¼-½") deep in loose, well-drained soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until germination. Cool soil temperatures are ideal for establishing radishes.
Lighting: Full sun to partial shade
Watering Needs: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during germination and root development. Avoid letting the soil dry out, as inconsistent moisture can result in tough, pithy or split roots.
Starting Instructions: Direct sow outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Sow seeds thinly in rows and thin seedlings to approximately 2.5-5 cm (1-2") apart. Make successive sowings every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
Care Instructions: Grow in loose, fertile, well-drained soil free of stones and large clumps. Keep plants evenly watered and weed-free. Harvest promptly once roots reach maturity for the best flavour and texture.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Garden Benefits: One of the quickest and easiest vegetables to grow from seed. Ideal for vegetable gardens, raised beds, containers and succession planting, providing a fast harvest early in the season.
Special Notes: Early Scarlet Globe is a traditional round red radish valued for its quick maturity, crisp white flesh and mild peppery flavour. Radishes are cool-season vegetables and may bolt or develop a stronger flavour during hot weather.
Tips For Success: Sow early in spring and again throughout the season for continuous harvests. Keep the soil consistently moist and avoid overcrowding. Harvest young roots promptly for the crispest texture and mildest flavour.
Companion Plants: Lettuce, spinach, peas, carrots, cucumbers, beans, beets and chives.
