Common Name: Organic Lettuce Mesclun Mix
Scientific Name: Lactuca sativa
Life Cycle: Annual
Description Detail: A colourful and flavourful blend of salad greens selected for a variety of textures, colours and flavours. This mix is ideal for harvesting tender baby greens or allowing plants to mature for fresh salads. Certified organic seed and suitable for container growing.
Days to Germinate: 7–14 days
Bloom / Harvest: Approximately 45 days to maturity. Baby greens can be harvested earlier, once leaves are large enough to use.
Germination Needs: Sow seeds 3-5 mm (⅛-¼") deep in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination. Lettuce germinates best in cool conditions.
Lighting: Part sun to full sun
Watering Needs: Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during germination and periods of hot or dry weather. Avoid allowing the soil to become waterlogged.
Starting Instructions: Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Sow thinly in rows, or scatter seed over a prepared garden bed or container. For a continuous supply, make additional sowings every 2-3 weeks. Lettuce can also be started indoors 4–5 weeks before transplanting.
Care Instructions: Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and provide consistent moisture. Thin seedlings as needed to prevent overcrowding. Harvest young leaves regularly for tender greens and use the cut-and-come-again method for continued production.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Garden Benefits: Provides a convenient mixture of fresh salad greens with a range of colours, textures and flavours. Excellent for vegetable gardens, raised beds and containers, and well suited to successive sowing for an extended harvest.
Special Notes: Halifax Seed lists this organic Mesclun Mix at approximately 45 days to maturity. It is a direct-sown crop with a preference for part sun and well-drained soil.
Tips For Success: Sow small amounts frequently rather than planting everything at once. Keep the soil cool and consistently moist, especially during warm weather. Harvest leaves while young and tender, and provide some afternoon shade during hot periods to help reduce bolting.
Companion Plants: Radishes, carrots, cucumbers, peas, beets, onions, chives and herbs such as dill and cilantro.
