Common Name: Organic Cilantro / Coriander
Scientific Name: Coriandrum sativum
Life Cycle: Annual
Description Detail: A fast-growing culinary herb grown for its sharply flavoured, fresh green leaves and aromatic seeds, which are known as coriander. An excellent choice for fresh salsa, guacamole, curries, salads, soups and many other dishes. Certified organic seed and well suited to container growing.
Days to Germinate: 7–14 days
Bloom / Harvest: Harvest young leaves approximately 3-4 weeks after sowing, or as needed. Let the plants flower and set seed for a harvest of coriander seeds later in the season. The crop reaches maturity in approximately 40-60 days.
Germination Needs: Sow seeds about 6 mm (¼") deep in well-drained, consistently moist soil. Germination is best in cool to moderate temperatures. Avoid allowing the seedbed to dry out during germination.
Lighting: Full sun to partial sun
Watering Needs: Keep soil evenly moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water regularly when the soil begins to dry, avoiding consistently wet conditions.
Starting Instructions: Direct sow outdoors after the risk of severe frost has passed. Cilantro develops a taproot and generally performs best when sown directly rather than transplanted. Sow successive crops every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh leaves.
Care Instructions: Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and provide regular moisture. Harvest leaves frequently to encourage continued production. For coriander seed, allow plants to flower and let the seed heads mature before harvesting.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Garden Benefits: Provides fresh culinary herbs throughout the growing season and produces small flowers that attract beneficial pollinators. Suitable for vegetable gardens, herb gardens and containers.
Special Notes: Halifax Seed lists this product as certified organic seed, suitable for containers, with a mature height of approximately 60-76 cm (24-30").
Tips For Success: Make successive sowings rather than planting the entire crop at once. Harvest leaves regularly and sow during cooler periods to help delay bolting. Keep plants well watered during hot, dry weather.
Companion Plants: Basil, chives, dill, parsley, spinach, lettuce, peas and other cool-season herbs and vegetables.
