Common Name: Oregano
Scientific Name: Origanum vulgare
Life Cycle: Perennial
Description Detail: A hardy, aromatic perennial herb that forms an attractive shrub-like mound. The small, flavourful leaves can be used fresh or dried and are a classic seasoning for Italian dishes, sauces, soups, vegetables and meats.
Days to Germinate: 7–14 days
Bloom / Harvest: Harvest leaves throughout the growing season once plants are established. The strongest flavour is often obtained just before the plant flowers. Small flowers appear in summer and attract pollinators.
Germination Needs: Sow seeds shallowly on the surface of moist, well-drained seed-starting mix and press gently into the soil. Keep consistently moist and provide warmth and bright light. Do not bury seeds deeply.
Lighting: Full sun
Watering Needs: Keep soil evenly moist during germination and establishment. Once established, oregano prefers moderately dry conditions and should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings.
Starting Instructions: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. Press seeds gently onto the surface of the growing medium and provide bright light. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, spacing plants approximately 45-60 cm (18-24") apart.
Care Instructions: Grow in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight. Harvest regularly to encourage bushier growth. Trim plants after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Oregano can be grown in containers and brought indoors for fresh leaves during winter.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Garden Benefits: Provides a reliable supply of fresh or dried culinary herbs and attracts bees and other pollinators when allowed to flower. Its compact, shrub-like habit makes it useful in herb gardens, borders and containers.
Special Notes: Halifax Seed lists oregano as Origanum vulgare, suitable for containers and full sun, with a mature height of approximately 60-75 cm (24-30"). The current Halifax Seed listing offers 2 g, 5 g and packet sizes.
Tips For Success: Provide excellent drainage, plenty of sunlight and avoid overwatering. Harvest regularly to encourage fresh growth, and dry leaves for long-term storage. Pruning after flowering helps keep plants compact and productive.
Companion Plants: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil, rosemary, thyme, sage and marjoram.
