Common Name: Mesclun Salad Mix

Scientific Name: Lactuca sativa

Life Cycle: Annual

Description Detail: A colourful mixture of salad greens selected for a variety of flavours, textures and colours. This versatile mix is ideal for fresh salads and can be harvested as tender baby greens or allowed to mature. It is well suited to vegetable gardens, raised beds and containers.

Days to Germinate: 7-14 days

Bloom / Harvest: Approximately 45 days to maturity. Baby greens can be harvested earlier, once the leaves are large enough to use. For a continuous supply, harvest using the cut-and-come-again method.

Germination Needs: Sow seeds 3-5 mm (⅛–¼") deep in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination. Lettuce germinates best in cool conditions.

Lighting: Full sun to partial sun

Watering Needs: Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during germination and periods of warm or dry weather. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Starting Instructions: Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Sow thinly in rows or scatter over a prepared garden bed or container and cover lightly with soil. Seeds can also be started indoors 4–5 weeks before transplanting. Make successive sowings every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest.

Care Instructions: Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and maintain consistent moisture. Thin crowded seedlings to encourage healthy growth and good air circulation. Harvest young leaves regularly and provide afternoon shade during hot weather to help reduce bolting.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Garden Benefits: Provides a convenient variety of fresh salad greens with different colours, textures and flavours. The quick-growing mix is excellent for home vegetable gardens, raised beds, containers and small-space gardening.

Special Notes: Halifax Seed lists Mesclun Mix at 45 days to maturity. It is suitable for containers and can be either direct sown or started indoors. Halifax Seed also carries a separate certified organic Mesclun Mix, so this card refers to the standard Mesclun Mix seed.

Tips For Success: Sow small amounts every few weeks rather than planting the entire packet at once. Keep the soil consistently moist and harvest leaves while they are young and tender. During hot weather, provide some afternoon shade to help prolong the harvest.

Companion Plants: Radishes, carrots, cucumbers, peas, beets, onions, chives, dill and cilantro.
