Characteristics: A cold-hardy Purple Stripe-type hardneck garlic producing large, white bulbs with attractive purple marbling and approximately 5 to 7 large cloves. The cloves have a hot, spicy flavour when raw that becomes sweeter and nuttier when cooked. Edible scapes develop in early summer and can be harvested for cooking. Russian Purple is well suited to Canadian gardens and is particularly valued for its reliable performance in cold climates.

Maintenance Requirements: Low; plant individual cloves in the fall, approximately 3 inches (8 cm) deep, in fertile, well-drained soil. Cure harvested bulbs in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated location before storage.
