Neoregelias are prized primarily for their gorgeous, brightly patterned rosettes of strap-like foliage rather than their flowers. They are famous for their unique biological "urn" or central cup structure, which they use in the wild to trap rainfall and nutrients.

When the plant reaches maturity and is getting ready to bloom, the inner leaves directly surrounding the central cup undergo a striking physiological shift, turning a brilliant, flamboyant red or vivid pink to attract pollinators in the wild. Each plant only blooms once in its entire lifetime. Small, subtle violet or white flowers open up a few at a time directly out of the water inside the central cup. After blooming, the mother plant will slowly decline over several months, but not before producing "pups" (small clone offshoots) around its base to carry on the life cycle.

Scale Insects

What To Look For: Small oval or round bumps on stems or leaves; they may look like part of the plant. Sticky residue/honeydew, sooty mold. Yellowing leaves, leaf drop, and decline in plant vigour.

How To Treat: Physically scrape or wipe off scale insects when you see them; use your fingernail or a soft brush. Use horticultural/plant-safe oils or insecticidal soap when the crawler stage is active. Re-inspect regularly because scale eggs and crawlers can hide under shells.
