All bonsai require excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Ceramic pots are designed with large drainage holes and feet that lift the pot off the ground, allowing water to escape freely and air to circulate around the root ball. Growing a tree in a relatively shallow pot restricts root growth, which in turn limits the growth of the trunk and branches. This is a fundamental technique of the bonsai art form.
Lighting: Depends on the specific plant variety. Most plants do well in bright, indirect light.
Watering: Check the soil daily. Water only when the soil feels slightly dry to the touch about 1 cm deep. When it is time to water, do so completely. Either water from above using a watering can with a fine nozzle until water runs freely from the drainage holes, or submerge the pot in a basin of water for a few minutes until the soil is saturated. Never let your bonsai sit in a tray of standing water, as this can lead to root rot.
