Characteristics: A hardy North American native with soft, silvery-grey foliage and upright spikes of small violet-purple flowers with striking golden-orange stamens. Extremely drought-tolerant once established and an excellent choice for naturalized gardens, prairie plantings, pollinator gardens, and erosion control. Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. As a member of the pea family, it also helps improve soil by fixing nitrogen.

Maintenance Requirements: Low maintenance. Prefers well-drained sandy, gravelly, or loamy soils and performs best in full sun. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and rarely requires supplemental watering. Avoid overly fertile or poorly drained soils. Pruning is generally unnecessary but may be done in early spring to remove dead or damaged stems and maintain a tidy appearance. Does not require frequent fertilization and is exceptionally hardy in Canadian climates.
