Scientific Name: Vernonia fasciculata
Common Name: Ironweed
Exposure: Full sun
Blooming Time: July to September
Bloom Duration: 6 to 8 weeks
Fragrance: No noticeable fragrance
Plant Growing Habit: Upright, clump-forming
Characteristics: A tall, North American native perennial with sturdy stems topped by dense clusters of vibrant purple flower heads that provide outstanding late-season colour. Its lance-shaped green foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season. An exceptional nectar source for bees, butterflies, monarchs, and other beneficial pollinators. The seed heads also provide food for birds in autumn and winter. Ideal for native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, meadows, rain gardens, and naturalized landscapes.
Spacing: 60 to 90 cm apart
Height: 120 to 180 cm
Width: 60 to 90 cm
Maintenance Requirements: Low maintenance. Prefers full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained soil but adapts well to average garden soils once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it tolerates short periods of drought but performs best with consistent moisture. Cut back stems in late fall or early spring before new growth begins. Staking is generally unnecessary due to its strong stems, although plants may benefit from support in very windy locations. Fertilization is rarely required. Hardy and well-suited to Canadian gardens in Zones 3–8.
