It’s back! The long-time favourite Tendersweet Orange Watermelon is here to delight with its highly unique and intensely sweet orange flesh. More than just a novelty, this vigorous, open-pollinated variety produces oblong-shaped melons that compete with any traditional watermelon on sweetness and pure flavour. These large fruits weigh in at a hefty 7 kg size and greater, ensuring a bountiful and memorable harvest.

  • Type: Open-Pollinated Watermelon
  • Fruit: Large, oblong shape, 7 kg size and greater, unique sweet orange flesh
  • Features: Exceptional sweet flavour; unique orange flesh; large fruit size; reliable producer.

This vividly coloured melon offers all the refreshing qualities of a classic watermelon, plus a unique boost! The striking orange flesh indicates high levels of beta-carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A, which is essential for vision and immune function. It remains an excellent source of Vitamin C and provides hydrating, low-calorie refreshment for the whole family.

Watermelons are heat-loving vines that need ample space and consistent care to develop their size and sweetness.

  • Sow Indoors: Starting indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost is recommended in short-season areas. Use biodegradable pots to minimize root shock during transplanting.
  • Sow Outdoors: Direct sow seeds into thoroughly warmed soil after all danger of frost has passed.
  • Germination: Seed requires a crucial soil temperature of 24°C to germinate properly. Germination occurs in 5 to 10 days.
  • Planting Depth: 12 mm
  • Spacing: Sow 6 to 8 seeds per hill, 12 mm deep, in hills spaced 1.8 m to 2.4 m from each other. Thin to 3 to 4 plants per hill.

Provide a site with Full Sun and rich, well-drained soil. Never let the plants lack for water, especially when the fruit is setting, as this is key to developing large, juicy melons.

If you want to grow a melon that stops people in their tracks, the Tendersweet Orange is it. Its stunning interior colour and high performance, competing with the best varieties on sweetness, make it a perfect conversation starter and a rewarding crop. Choose this long-time favourite for its unique flavour and impressive size.
