Best of all, this variety offers natural tolerance to both Fusarium and Anthracnose, ensuring a strong harvest.
- Type: Open-Pollinated Watermelon
- Fruit: Large, 9 kg, striped green rind, dark red flesh, 25 cm x 30 cm
- Features: Exceptionally sweet flavour and crisp texture; high yield; tolerant to Fusarium and Anthracnose.
Watermelon is a summertime favourite for its refreshing qualities, but it’s also highly nutritious. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene). The vibrant red flesh is loaded with the powerful antioxidant lycopene and its high water content makes it the perfect hydrating and low-calorie treat.
Watermelons are heavy feeders and require plenty of space, heat, and consistent moisture to produce large, sweet fruit.
- Sow Indoors: Starting indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost is recommended in short-season areas. Use biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance.
- Sow Outdoors: Direct sow seeds into thoroughly warmed soil after all danger of frost has passed.
- Germination: The seed requires a soil temperature of 24°C to germinate properly. Germination occurs in 5 to 10 days.
- Planting Depth: 12 mm
- Spacing: Sow 6 to 8 seeds per hill, 12 mm deep, in hills spaced 1.8 m to 2.4 m from each other. Thin to 3 to 4 plants per hill.
Provide a site with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Never let the plants lack for water, especially when the fruit is setting. Harvest when the underside turns yellow and a dull thud is heard when tapping the melon.
For a dependable harvest of large, classic, sweet watermelons, the Crimson Sweet is the ideal choice. Its built-in disease tolerance takes the guesswork out of growing, and its hefty 9 kg average weight means one melon provides plenty of refreshing, crisp, dark-red flesh for the whole family to enjoy.
