Approximately 25 seeds per package (350 seeds per gram) Heirloom
Despite the multitude of hybrid varieties available, the classic Beefsteak Tomato remains our most popular main-season tomato, mostly due to its consistent performance and heavy yields! This Heirloom produces large, solid fruits of a rich, red colour, weighing up to a hefty 260 g. The indeterminate vines grow to a height of 50 cm to 100 cm and provide individual fruits that ripen successively over many days, ensuring a long and generous harvest.
- Type: Indeterminate Heirloom Slicing Tomato
- Fruit: Large, solid, rich red fruits, up to 260 g
- Features: Most popular main season variety; consistent performance; heavy yields; excellent for slicing.
As a primary source of summer nutrition, Beefsteak tomatoes offer essential health benefits. They are a good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, and are particularly rich in the antioxidant lycopene, especially when consumed ripe. The large, meaty size is perfect for fresh, thick slices on sandwiches and burgers.
This reliable indeterminate tomato requires an early start indoors and consistent watering throughout the growing season.
- Sow Indoors: Sow seeds indoors at least six weeks before the last spring frost date (up to 8 weeks is ideal). Use a peatmoss-based growing mix.
- Germination: The temperature of the seeding mix should be 21°C to 24°C for prompt germination, which occurs in 10 to 14 days.
- Seedling Care: When the seedlings are 4 cm high, transplant each into individual pots, reducing the temperature to 15°C to 18°C until planting outside in late May.
- Transplanting: After hardening off, transplant into well-drained organic soil. Space the indeterminate plants 90 cm apart.
- Culture: Tomatoes need warmth, direct sunlight, and a steady supply of water. It’s important to irrigate frequently so the plants never wilt. Apply the water to the soil rather than showering it down over the plants.
- Soil Management: It is very important to keep plants evenly watered, as fluctuations in available soil moisture can lead to problems such as fruit cracking or splitting and blossom end rot. Apply a mulch of straw around plants to protect them from soil-borne diseases and help conserve moisture. Rotate the crop position in the garden every year; wait three years to use the same patch. Dig out and discard diseased plants; do not compost. Bears first ripe fruit about 60 days after transplanting.
For a dependable, classic, main-season tomato with rich flavour and plenty of size for slicing, the Heirloom Beefsteak remains the top choice. Its consistent performance and heavy yields ensure your kitchen is well-stocked with the best homegrown tomatoes all summer long.
