This butterhead lettuce, first offered in 1935, is a time-tested heirloom that produces a distinct, mouth-watering flavour. The heads have deep, green-shaded leaves and are always in high demand. An excellent variety for either early spring or late summer sowing, this dependable lettuce is a favourite for its tender texture and classic taste.

  • Type: Heirloom Vegetable (Butterhead)
  • Fruit: Deep green shaded leaves
  • Features: Distinct, mouth-watering flavour; tender texture; a classic heirloom from 1935.

Bibb lettuce is a nutrient-rich vegetable with a mild flavour. It is an excellent source of Vitamin K and a good source of Vitamin A (beta-carotene) and Folate. This lettuce also contains minerals such as iron, potassium, and manganese, in addition to dietary fibre and beneficial antioxidants.

  • Sowing: As soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, sow seeds about 3 mm deep in rows 45 cm apart. Sow every two weeks thereafter to ensure a continuous supply.
  • Care: Lettuce is a sun-loving, cool-weather crop that grows best in organic, well-drained soil. An even supply of moisture during the entire growth period is essential for success.
  • Harvesting: Harvest head lettuce by cutting the head off at the base just below the lower leaves. Once the plant bolts (starts to produce a rapidly growing flower stem), the leaves become bitter.
  • Germination: Germination occurs in approximately 7 days.

For a reliable and delicious head lettuce, Bibb is an excellent choice. Its tender, flavourful leaves make it a perfect addition to salads, and its proven performance for both early and late sowings ensures a long season of fresh greens. This Heirloom’s consistent quality and high demand prove that a classic never goes out of style.
