A time-tested favourite first developed in the early 1920s, Hale’s Best Cantaloupe produces large, excellent-quality melons for the home and market gardener. This open-pollinated variety yields fruits up to 1.8 kg with bright salmon-coloured flesh that is thick, firm, and sweet. The yellowish-green rind is heavily netted and practically rib-less.
- Type: Heirloom Cantaloupe/Melon, Open-Pollinated
- Fruit Size: 1.8 kg, 15 cm diameter, large
- Features: Excellent quality; thick, firm, sweet salmon-coloured flesh; heavily netted rind; ideal for market gardeners.
For best results, select a south-facing, wind-sheltered site for your melons. This variety is best grown in soils with a pH greater than 6.5 and less than 7.5.
Planting: Sow 5 seeds 2.5 cm deep per hill. Space hills 1.5-2 m apart. Once seedlings are established, thin to 3 to 4 plants per hill. In short-season areas, start seeds indoors in peat or paper pots 4 weeks before your planned transplant date. Seeds need a warm soil to germinate properly; do not sow into soil cooler than 21°C. Germination occurs in 10-14 days.
Care: Keep the melon vines evenly watered throughout the growing season.
The Hale’s Best Cantaloupe is a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking a reliable and high-quality melon. Its century-long reputation for producing delicious, sweet fruit makes it a dependable staple. The thick, firm flesh is perfect for a refreshing snack, and its suitability for market gardeners speaks to its consistent and excellent quality. This heirloom variety is a true classic that will reward you with a bountiful harvest.
