General Information: Orange Mint (Mentha citrata), also known as Bergamot Mint or Eau de Cologne Mint, is a perennial herb recognized for its distinctive citrus-like aroma reminiscent of bergamot orange and lavender. This scent is primarily due to its high content of linalyl acetate, a compound also found in bergamot oil. The plant reaches about 30 cm in height and features smooth, dark green leaves with finely toothed margins, often exhibiting purple hues, especially along the edges. When crushed, the leaves emit a refreshing fragrance. Orange Mint thrives in moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate full sun to partial shade. Similar to other mint species, it has a vigorous growth habit and can spread extensively; thus, planting in containers or using root barriers is recommended to manage its growth. Culinary uses include flavouring teas, desserts, and salads, while the essential oil extracted from the plant is utilized in perfumery and aromatherapy. Traditionally, it has been employed for medicinal purposes, such as alleviating digestive issues and headaches.
