Common Name: Moss Curled Parsley
Scientific Name: Petroselinum crispum
Life Cycle: Biennial, usually grown as an annual
Description Detail: A popular culinary parsley with finely cut, tightly curled bright green leaves. Its attractive texture makes it especially useful as a garnish, while the fresh leaves add a mild, herbaceous flavour to soups, salads, sauces and other dishes.
Days to Germinate: 14-28 days
Bloom / Harvest: Approximately 70 days to maturity. Harvest fresh leaves as needed once plants are well established. If left to grow into a second season, plants may flower and produce seed.
Germination Needs: Sow seeds approximately 6 mm (¼") deep in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist throughout the slow germination period. Germination is best in cool to moderate temperatures.
Lighting: Full sun
Watering Needs: Keep soil evenly moist during germination and early growth. Once established, water regularly when the soil begins to dry, especially during hot or dry periods.
Starting Instructions: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost, or direct sow outdoors once the soil can be worked. Parsley develops a taproot, so transplant seedlings carefully to avoid disturbing the roots. Thin plants to approximately 15-20 cm (6-8") apart.
Care Instructions: Grow in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Harvest the outer stems and leaves first, allowing the centre of the plant to continue producing new growth. Remove weeds regularly and provide adequate spacing for good air circulation.
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
Garden Benefits: Provides an attractive and productive culinary herb for vegetable and herb gardens. The fine, curled foliage also adds ornamental texture to containers and garden borders. Flowers produced in the second year can attract beneficial insects.
Special Notes: Halifax Seed lists Moss Curled Parsley at 70 days to maturity, with full-sun requirements and suitability for containers. It is available in packet, 5 g and 10 g sizes.
Tips For Success: Be patient during germination and keep the soil consistently moist. Harvest outer leaves regularly rather than cutting the entire plant, allowing fresh foliage to continue developing. For the best flavour, harvest leaves before the plant begins flowering.
Companion Plants: Tomatoes, asparagus, carrots, peppers, chives, onions, peas and lettuce.
