Scientific Name:

Hemerocallis 'Daring Deception'

Type:

Thriller / Filler / Reblooming Ornamental Perennial

Growth Details:

Mature Size: Height of 60–65 cm (24–26 inches) x Width of 45–60 cm (18–24 inches).

Growth Habit: Upright, clumping, and arching.

Form: Dense, fountain-like mound.

Growth Rate: Fast; rapidly increases its clump size and bud count year after year.

Flowering: Highly prolific; features heavily branched scapes with numerous buds that open sequentially.

Flowering Time: Mid-summer, with a reliable and heavy reblooming flush in late summer and early autumn.

Flower Colour: Dusty lavender-pink with a large, dark velvety-plum eye and a bright lime-green throat.

Environmental Needs:

Exposure: Full sun to partial shade (performs best with a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight).

Soil Preferences: Thrives in average, medium-moisture loam. Prefers a neutral to slightly acidic pH (\(6.0 - 6.8\)).

Soil Tolerance: Exceptional adaptability; easily tolerates heavy clay, poor sand, dry soil, and compacted ground where other perennials fail.

Watering: Low to moderate. Highly drought-tolerant once its extensive, fleshy root system anchors.

Container Role: Acts as an outstanding, structural Thriller or bold Filler in large patio estate containers.

Special Features:

Disease Resistances: Remarkably tough and virtually immune to most common garden pests, displaying high natural resistance to crown rot.

Native Species: Developed through advanced modern hybridization of parental species originally native to Asia.

Fast Growing: Swiftly expands into a large, multi-stemmed flowering clump.

Attracts: A major magnet for butterflies, hummingbirds, and native bees.

Uses: Mass plantings, roadside landscaping, container displays, and summer borders.

Resistance: Highly resistant to drought, heat, poor soil, urban pollution, road salt, and rabbits.

Ornamental & Landscape Value

Seasonal Interest:

Bloom Information: Features large, 5-inch wide, ruffled blossoms with extreme showiness. It is a "Tetraploid" variety, meaning petals are unusually thick, weather-resistant, and durable.

Fall Colour: Foliage remains a rich green late into the season before turning amber and dying back after a hard freeze.

Garden Value:

Ornamental Interest: Delivers exceptional visual impact through its large bicolour flowers, ruffled petal margins, and Fountain-like architectural foliage.

Landscaping Uses: Perfect for mass foundation plantings, sunny borders, erosion control on hillsides, cottage gardens, and urban streetscapes.

Garden/Landscape Benefits: An absolute workhorse that fills empty space quickly, crowds out aggressive weeds, and provides reliable summer colour with minimal care.

Wildlife & Human Value:

Wildlife Value: Provides an excellent high-summer nectar station for migrating hummingbirds and large butterflies.

Human Value: The absolute ultimate "indestructible" perennial for busy homeowners. It offers maximum visual reward and high-impact curb appeal with practically zero effort or maintenance.

Planting & Care Guide

Planting Considerations:

Best Time To Plant: Early spring or early autumn when natural rainfall is frequent and temperatures are mild.

Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart from center to center to allow the fountain-like foliage room to spread out.

Location Tips: Excellent for planting on hot, dry slopes or along walkways where road salt might wash into the soil. Avoid deep, heavy woodland shade.

Companion Plants: Pairs beautifully with Salvia, Echinacea (Coneflower), Leucanthemum (Shasta Daisy), and Perovskia (Russian Sage).

Care:

Light Requirements: Requires full sun for maximum bloom production and to ensure the contrasting eye zone develops its deepest coloration. Can tolerate light afternoon shade.

Moisture Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but is incredibly forgiving and easily survives dry spells once established.

Maintenance: Low maintenance. Snap off individual faded flowers daily to keep the stem looking pristine. Cut the entire flower stalk (scape) down to the ground once all its buds have finished blooming.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release garden fertilizer or a top-dressing of organic compost in early spring as fresh green blades emerge.

Tolerances:

High drought and heat tolerant, Clay soil and poor soil tolerant, Urban pollution and road salt tolerant, Black walnut tree tolerant (resists juglone), Rabbit resistant

Tips For Success:

Thinning/Pinching: For maximum bloom power, divide the clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or early autumn. This rejuvenates the center and gives you extra plants to spread around.

Support/Staking: Completely unnecessary; the flower scapes are thick, heavy, and engineered to remain perfectly upright under the weight of the blooms.

Mulching: Apply a 5 cm (2-inch) layer of shredded wood mulch around the base in spring to preserve moisture and suppress weeds until the foliage arches over to shade the soil.

Winter Protection: No special winter protection required. The plant is incredibly cold-hardy; simply clean away the dead, collapsed leaves in early spring before new growth starts.
