California Poppy is incredibly easy to grow and thrives with a hands-off approach. It dislikes being transplanted, so direct sowing is the best way to get a beautiful display.
- Site Selection: Choose a site with full sun and light, sandy soil.
- Sowing Outdoors: Sow seeds directly into the garden where they are to bloom. Plant them about 3-6 mm deep, and space them 15-20 cm apart.
- Upkeep: Lightly cultivate the soil and keep it moist until germination occurs. Germination takes 12-20 days.
- Important Note: Do not attempt to start this seed indoors, as it is intolerant of transplanting. California Poppy can re-seed itself, but it is not considered invasive.
If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, high-impact flower that can handle tough conditions, this is the plant for you. Its ability to produce a continuous stream of colourful blooms in dry soil makes it a perfect choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or any sunny spot where other plants might struggle. The elegant, finely textured foliage adds visual interest, and the cheerful flowers are a joy to behold. As a bonus, you can bring the beauty of these Heirloom blooms indoors in your own homemade bouquets.
