Sow seed directly into the garden for best results.

Planting: Plant seeds 1.25 cm deep in rows 30-45 cm apart. Successive sowings as late as the first of July will help you extend your harvest. Germination occurs in 7-10 days.

Care: Beets produce a compound seed so each one can yield up to four sprouts. Thinning is essential for good root formation. Thin seedlings to 10 cm apart, and enjoy the tops of thinned beets as a source of tender baby greens. Ensure your plants receive consistent water during dry spells, especially as the roots begin to swell. Fertilizing will help improve the quality and size of your roots. Note that the yellow colouration of the flesh will fade slightly when cooked.
