A timeless classic for a reason, Organic Wisconsin SMR-58 is a naturally robust heirloom that produces a large number of pickling cucumbers. Its medium-green fruits, with their tiny black spines and neat taper, are a gift from the earth and are a very popular choice with both commercial growers and backyard gardeners.
- Type: Heirloom Organic Pickling Cucumber
- Fruit: Medium green, black-spined, tapers at both ends
- Features: Prolific yield; naturally disease resistant; perfect for pickling.
For the healthiest growth, cucumbers thrive in a wind-sheltered site with a rich, warm sandy loam. Plant seeds after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. Cooler soil can lead to poor germination.
Nurturing Your Plants: Sow seeds 2 cm deep, with 8 seeds per hill in hills spaced 120-150 cm apart. After the seeds sprout, thin to 3-4 plants per hill. For an early start to the season, you can start seeds indoors in fibre pots 3 to 5 weeks before planting out. Wait until early June to transplant outdoors to avoid cool nights, and blossom-end drop. Cucumbers are shallow-rooted, so they need a consistent, even supply of water. Water early in the morning to prevent mildew on the foliage. Harvest cucumbers by cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife. Germination occurs in 7-10 days.
Embrace the wholesome satisfaction of growing your own organic pickles. This time-tested heirloom offers the peace of mind of natural disease resistance and the simple pleasure of a heavy, consistent harvest. Its popularity with both small-scale and large-scale growers is a testament to its dependable performance, making it a perfect addition for any garden.
