Its crisp leaves are an attractive creamy yellow-green, often highlighted with beautiful red fringes that appear in cooler spring or autumn weather. A pure delight for the palate and the eye.
- Type: Heirloom Organic Vegetable, Butterhead
- Fruit: Creamy yellow-green leaves with red fringes
- Features: Crisp texture; unforgettable flavour; French Heirloom from the 1880s.
Butterhead lettuce is a nutrient-rich vegetable with a mild flavour. It is an excellent source of Vitamin K and a good source of Vitamin A (beta-carotene) and Folate. This lettuce also contains minerals such as iron, potassium, and manganese, in addition to dietary fibre and beneficial antioxidants.
- Sowing: Since lettuce is a cool-weather crop, sow your seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, then every two weeks thereafter to ensure a continuous supply. Sow about 3 mm deep in rows 45 cm apart, or in blocks or squares.
- Care: While lettuce is fairly adaptable, it will make its best growth in organic, well-drained soils in a sunny location. An even supply of moisture during the entire growth period is imperative for success. Thin heading lettuce to 30 cm spacing.
- Harvesting: Harvest head lettuce by cutting the head off at the base just below the lower leaves. Once lettuce bolts (starts to produce a rapidly growing flower stem), the leaves will become bitter.
- Germination: Germination occurs in 5-10 days.
For a taste of natural sophistication, this organic French Heirloom is an exquisite choice. Its beautiful colours and legendary flavour are a pure joy to cultivate and enjoy. This lettuce is a testament to the timeless appeal of honest, organic gardening and a rewarding way to connect with a rich tradition.
