Cucumbers grow best in a wind-sheltered site with rich, warm sandy loam. Nurture the earth by working in large amounts of garden compost or composted manure before planting. Sowing & Care: Sow seeds 2.0 cm deep with 8 seeds per hill, in hills spaced 120-150 cm apart. After germination, thin to 3-4 plants per hill. For a head start, you can start seed indoors in fibre pots 3 to 5 weeks before planting out, but wait until early June to transplant outdoors, to avoid cool nights. Cucumbers are shallow-rooted and need a consistent, even supply of water. Water early in the morning to avoid creating favourable conditions for mildew on the foliage. Harvest cucumbers by cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife. Germination occurs in 7-10 days.
