Bird Feeder Maintenance

Summertime Bird Feeder Care and Maintenance

June. 22nd 2026

For many gardeners, bird feeders are a year-round source of enjoyment. Watching goldfinches, chickadees, nuthatches, hummingbirds, and other backyard visitors can bring life and activity to your outdoor space throughout the summer months.

However, warmer temperatures mean bird feeders require a little extra attention. Heat, humidity, and increased bird activity can cause seed to spoil more quickly and create conditions where bacteria and mold can thrive.

A few simple maintenance habits can help keep your feathered visitors healthy and your feeders in great condition all season long.

Why Summer Maintenance Matters

Summer weather creates different challenges than winter feeding.
High temperatures and humidity can cause:

  • Seed to spoil more quickly
  • Mold to develop inside feeders
  • Bacteria to multiply on feeding surfaces
  • Wet seed to clump together after rain
  • Increased risk of disease transmission between birds

Regular cleaning helps reduce these risks and creates a safer feeding environment.

Clean Feeders Regularly

One of the most important steps in bird feeder maintenance is routine cleaning.
During the summer months, feeders should ideally be cleaned every one to two weeks. If you notice wet seed, visible mold, or heavy bird traffic, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.

To clean a feeder:

  1. Empty any remaining seed.
  2. Disassemble the feeder if possible.
  3. Wash thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
  4. Rinse well.
  5. Allow all parts to dry completely before refilling.

Always remove old or spoiled seed before adding fresh seed.

Keep Seed Fresh

Summer heat can shorten the lifespan of bird seed.

To help keep seed fresh:

  • Buy quantities you can use within a reasonable time.
  • Store seed in a cool, dry location.
  • Keep storage containers sealed.
  • Refill feeders with smaller amounts more frequently.
  • Discard any seed that smells musty or shows signs of mold.

Fresh seed is more attractive to birds and safer for their health.

Hummingbird Feeders

Hummingbirds are some of the most exciting summer visitors to our gardens, but their feeders require more frequent maintenance than seed feeders.

During hot weather, sugar water can spoil quickly, especially when temperatures climb. Fermented nectar can be harmful to hummingbirds and may encourage mold growth inside the feeder.

To keep hummingbird feeders safe and attractive:

To keep hummingbird feeders safe and attractive:

  • Change nectar every 2–3 days during hot weather.
  • In cooler weather, nectar can typically be changed every 4–5 days.
  • Clean feeders thoroughly each time you refill them.
  • Pay special attention to feeding ports and small crevices where mold can develop.
  • Always use fresh nectar.

Hummingbird Nectar

For hummingbirds, offer a simple homemade nectar made with:
1 part white sugar to 4 parts water

You can also use pre-mixed or concentrate hummingbird nectar products that are specifically formulated for hummingbirds.

To help keep hummingbirds healthy, stick to these recommended nectar options only. Do not use honey, brown sugar, molasses, artificial sweeteners, fruit juices, or other homemade substitutes, as they can be harmful to hummingbirds or promote the growth of bacteria and fungi.

No red dye is necessary—the coloured parts of the feeder are enough to attract hummingbirds.

Another common myth is that leaving feeders up into late summer and fall will prevent hummingbirds from migrating. In reality, hummingbirds migrate based on changes in daylight length, not feeder availability. Keeping feeders filled during migration season can help provide much-needed energy for birds preparing for their journey south.

Tip:

If you have multiple hummingbird feeders, place them in different areas of the yard. This can help reduce competition between territorial hummingbirds and allow more birds to feed comfortably.

Choosing the Right Food and Feeder

Different birds have different feeding habits. Offering a variety of foods and feeder styles can help attract a wider range of species to your backyard.

Don't Forget Fresh Water

While feeders often get the most attention, water can be just as important for birds during the summer months.

Birds rely on clean water for drinking and bathing, especially during hot weather. A reliable water source can attract species that may not regularly visit feeders and can quickly become one of the busiest spots in your garden.

Bird Bath Maintenance Tips

To keep your bird bath safe and inviting:

  • Refresh the water every day or two during hot weather.
  • Empty and scrub the basin regularly to prevent algae buildup.
  • Remove leaves, feathers, and other debris.
  • Keep water relatively shallow, ideally 2–3 inches deep or less.
  • Place bird baths near shrubs or trees so birds have a safe place to retreat if threatened.

Preventing Mosquitoes

Stagnant water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Regularly changing the water is the easiest way to prevent this while keeping your bird bath healthy for wildlife.

Create a Bird-Friendly Backyard

Bird feeders are just one piece of a healthy backyard habitat.

You can make your garden even more welcoming by:

  • Planting native trees and shrubs
  • Growing pollinator-friendly flowers
  • Providing shelter and nesting areas
  • Maintaining a reliable source of fresh water
  • Avoiding unnecessary pesticide use

A combination of food, water, and shelter helps support birds throughout the summer season.

Watch for Signs of Disease

Healthy birds are active, alert, and energetic.

If you notice birds that appear lethargic, have swollen eyes, or show unusual behaviour, consider temporarily removing feeders and cleaning them thoroughly.

Reducing crowding around feeding areas can also help limit the spread of disease among backyard birds.
