Growing Guide

Starting Instructions:

  • When: Direct sow after the last frost once the soil has warmed to at least 16°C.
  • Where: Well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny location; also performs well in containers.
  • How To Plant: Sow seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep.

Germination:

Prefers soil temperatures of 16°C–29°C (60°F–84°F). Consistent moisture is critical during emergence.

Care:

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (at least 6 hours daily).
  • Moisture Requirements: Moderate; requires consistent soil moisture, especially during flowering and pod development.
  • Frost Tolerance: Frost-sensitive; however, it is uniquely tolerant of cooler soils than most other bean varieties.

Tips For Success:

  • Succession: Sow every 10–14 days until mid-July for a continuous harvest.
  • Harvesting: Pick regularly when pods are 5–6 inches long to encourage the plant to continue producing.
  • Care: Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leaves at the expense of pods.
