Common Names:

Roselily, Double Oriental Lily, Pollen-Free Oriental Lily, Rose Lily

Scientific Name:

Lilium x (Oriental Double Group) ‘Roselily®’ Series

Type:

Thriller / Luxury Ornamental Bulb

Growth Details:

Mature Size: Height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) x Width of 25–30 cm (10–12 inches).

Growth Habit: Upright, vertical, and strictly columnar.

Form: Rigid, single erect stems emerging from an underground bulb rosette.

Growth Rate: Medium; steadily grows to its full height each spring to deliver a massive mid-summer performance.

Flowering: Highly prolific; each established stem produces a heavy cluster of multiple multi-petaled double blooms.

Flowering Time: Mid to late summer.

Flower Colour: Varies by specific cultivar within the series (including soft pastel pinks, deep raspberry reds, and pristine whites, often accented with dark pink speckles or a glowing white edge).

Environmental Needs:

Exposure: Full sun to partial shade (ideally "hot heads and cool feet"—meaning sunny stems but shaded soil around the roots).

Soil Preferences: Demands deep, fertile, organically rich, humic soils. Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (\(5.5 - 6.5\)).

Soil Tolerance: Forgiving of rich sandy loam or well-aerated clay loam. Completely intolerant of heavy, compacted clay or poorly drained winter soils, which cause bulb rot.

Watering: Moderate. Needs regular, steady moisture throughout the active growing and blooming seasons.

Container Role: Acts as the ultimate, high-luxury Thriller in premium patio containers and courtyard estate pots.

Special Features:

Disease Resistances: Remarkably tough and less prone to standard lily fungal issues if planted in perfectly draining soil.

Native Species: Developed through advanced horticultural selection from parental species native to East Asia.

Fast Growing: Shoots straight up from winter dormancy into a full-sized blooming powerhouse in a matter of weeks.

Attracts: A major draw for large butterflies, swallowtails, and evening-flying sphinx moths looking for fragrant nectar.

Uses: Elite cut flowers (lasts dramatically longer in a vase than single lilies), sensory gardens, luxury container displays, and fragrant borders.

Resistance: Notably resistant to deer and rabbits due to the tough, upright structure of the mature stems.

Care Guide

Ornamental & Landscape Value

Seasonal Interest:

Bloom Information: Features immense, multi-layered double flowers with an extraordinarily powerful, sweet scent. Extremely high showiness and exceptionally long-lasting due to the thick texture of the double petals.

Fall Colour: Foliage turns a golden-bronze color in late autumn before dying back completely to the ground for winter.

Garden Value:

Ornamental Interest: Delivers unparalleled visual impact with its multi-layered, peony-like double flowers and pristine, pollen-free appearance.

Landscaping Uses: Perfect for mid-border focal points, formal cutting gardens, fragrance gardens, and prominent placement near outdoor seating areas.

Garden/Landscape Benefits: Provides high-impact vertical structure, incredible fragrance density, and a clean blooming display that does not drop staining pollen on surrounding walkways or patio floors.

Wildlife & Human Value:

Wildlife Value: Offers an abundant nectar supply for butterflies and beneficial insects during the high-summer heat.

Human Value: Highly prized as a premium, florist-grade cut flower. Because they are completely pollen-free, they will never leave bright orange stains on clothes, tablecloths, or carpets, making them the ultimate fragrant lily to bring indoors.

Planting & Care Guide

Planting Considerations:

Best Time To Plant: Plant bulbs in early spring or early autumn when the soil is cool and manageable.

Spacing: Space 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart from center to center. Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.

Location Tips: Plant the bulbs among low-growing perennials, groundcovers, or apply a layer of mulch to keep the soil and root zone cool while letting the tall stems reach up into the bright sun.

Companion Plants: Pairs beautifully with Hosta, Astilbe, Ferns, Heuchera (Coral Bells), and low-growing ornamental grasses that shade the soil.

Care:

Light Requirements: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. Prefers six or more hours of direct morning sunlight with a bit of relief from blistering afternoon heat.

Moisture Requirements: Needs regular, deep watering to keep the soil consistently damp like a wrung-out sponge; never allow the bulbs to sit in soggy mud.

Maintenance: Minimal maintenance required. Snip off faded individual blossoms to keep the stem looking clean. Do not cut the main green stem or foliage back after blooming finishes; leave them intact until they naturally turn yellow in autumn to feed the underground bulb for next year.

Fertilization: High feeder. Apply a balanced, slow-release flower fertilizer in early spring as soon as the first shoots break the soil, and feed once more just as the flower buds begin to swell.

Tolerances:

Cold and severe frost tolerant, Heat tolerant (if roots are kept cool and shaded), Pollen-free (safe for allergy sufferers and pet owners concerned with pollen stains), Deer and rabbit resistant

Tips For Success:

Thinning/Pinching: Never pinch or cut back the main green stem during the spring or summer, as it needs those leaves to generate energy to store in the bulb for the following year.

Support/Staking: The stems are exceptionally thick and rigid compared to older lily varieties. However, if planted in breezier areas or packed with massive blooms, a single bamboo stake can help support the heavy flower load.

Mulching: Apply a 5 cm (2-inch) layer of organic leaf mould, clean compost, or shredded bark over the planting area to keep the bulbs cool and insulated from the summer sun.

Winter Protection: In incredibly cold winter climates (Zone 3 and 4), add an extra 10 cm (4 inches) of straw or leaf mulch over the bulb bed in late autumn to prevent extreme frost heaving. [1, 2]
