Care Guide

Ornamental & Landscape Value

Seasonal Interest:

Bloom Information: Produces massive, flat-topped clusters of starry, vibrant pink flowers that completely hide the foliage. Highly showy.

Fall Colour: Foliage deepens to intense, rich shades of dark burgundy, plum, and copper as nighttime temperatures drop in autumn.

Garden Value:

Ornamental Interest: Delivers high multi-season visual drama through its changing succulent leaf tones and dense, carpet-like texture.

Landscaping Uses: Ideal for rock gardens, green roofs, sunny slopes, mass groundcovers, modern succulent bowls, and filling narrow gaps between walkway stepping stones.

Garden/Landscape Benefits: Provides a living weed-blocking mulch, excels at stopping soil erosion on hot hillsides, and is highly fire-resistant due to high internal moisture retention.

Wildlife & Human Value:

Wildlife Value: An essential food source for butterflies and honeybees during the late summer slump when other flowers fade.

Human Value: Perfect for ultra-low-maintenance landscaping, reducing weed pulling, conserving water in dry regions, and providing safe, fire-retardant ground coverage near structures.

Planting & Care Guide

Planting Considerations:

Best Time To Plant: Spring or early summer after the threat of frost has passed to allow roots to establish in warm soil.

Spacing: Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow the creeping stems room to spread and knit together.

Location Tips: Choose hot, dry, sun-baked locations where other plants struggle. Avoid depressions or low spots in the yard where rainwater tends to pool.

Companion Plants: Pairs perfectly with Sempervivum (Hens and Chicks), Festuca glauca (Blue Fescue), Cerastium tomentosum (Snow-in-Summer), and low-growing Thyme.

Care:

Light Requirements: Full sun is mandatory to maintain the intense foliage colors and tight, compact growth habit.

Moisture Requirements: Extremely low; needs very little water once established. Soil must dry out completely between waterings.

Maintenance: Virtually zero maintenance. Trim back the faded flower heads in late autumn or early spring to keep the carpet looking clean.

Fertilization: Strictly avoid heavy feeding. A very light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is optional; excess nutrients cause weak, floppy growth.

Tolerances:

Extreme drought-tolerant, Heat and sun-bake tolerant, Poor, rocky, and sandy soil tolerant, Urban pollution tolerant, Deer and rabbit resistant

Tips For Success:

Thinning/Pinching: Not required. Stems that trail too far can easily be snipped back and simply pushed into bare soil elsewhere to root and grow new plants.

Support/Staking: Never required; grows completely prostrate along the ground.

Mulching: Avoid organic wood mulches which retain too much moisture against the succulent leaves. Use pea gravel, crushed stone, or lava rock instead.

Winter Protection: No winter protection is needed in recommended zones. Ensure excellent winter drainage, as cold, soggy soil is the only threat to its survival.
