Types of Roses You Can Grow

Roses come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Here are some popular types available at Scott’s Nursery, each with unique characteristics:

Hybrid Tea Roses

Description: Classic roses with large, elegant, single blooms on long stems, often fragrant and showy.

Uses: Perfect for formal garden beds, cutting gardens, or as striking focal points in landscapes.

Care: Requires full sun and well-drained soil; prune annually to shape and encourage blooms, and water consistently, especially during dry periods.

Floribunda Roses

Description: Bushy roses that produce clusters of medium-sized blooms in a variety of colours, providing continuous flowering.

Uses: Ideal for mass plantings, garden borders, or adding vibrant colour to small and large garden spaces.

Care: Requires full sun and well-drained soil; prune lightly to maintain shape and remove spent flowers, and water regularly during dry periods.

Grandiflora Roses

Description: Elegant roses with large, showy blooms on tall, upright plants that combine qualities of hybrid teas and floribundas.

Uses: Perfect for garden beds, borders, or as striking focal points in landscapes.

Care: Thrive in full sun with well-drained soil; prune annually to maintain shape and encourage blooms, and water consistently.

Climbing Roses

Description: Long, flexible canes with abundant, often fragrant blooms that can cover walls, fences, or trellises.

Uses: Ideal for vertical gardening, arbours, pergolas, fences, or creating a dramatic garden focal point.

Care: Requires full sun and well-drained soil; tie canes to supports, prune annually to encourage flowering, and water regularly.

 Shrub Roses

Description: Vigorous, bushy roses with abundant blooms and a natural, informal shape.

Uses: Perfect for borders, hedges, mass plantings, or low-maintenance garden areas.

Care: Tolerant of a variety of soils; prune lightly to shape and remove dead wood, and water regularly during dry spells.

Explorer Roses

Description: Hardy, disease-resistant roses with medium to large blooms and bushy growth.

Uses: Ideal for garden beds, borders, and Canadian climates; great for adding long-lasting colour.

Care: Thrive in full sun with well-drained soil; prune annually and water regularly, especially in dry periods.

How to Plant Roses

  1. Choose a sunny location: Roses need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  2. Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.

  3. Planting: Dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots without crowding. Place the rose so the graft union (bulge near base) is just above soil level.

  4. Watering: Deep, regular watering, especially during the first year. Avoid wetting foliage to reduce disease risk.

Pruning Your Roses

Pruning keeps roses healthy, encourages flowering, and maintains shape.
When to prune: Early spring, just as buds begin to swell.
How to prune:

  • Remove dead, damaged, or weak canes.

  • Cut back to an outward-facing bud to promote open growth.

  • For Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, remove about one-third of the previous year’s growth.

  • For Climbers, prune after flowering to shape and remove old wood.

Fertilizing for Bloom Power

  • Timing: Begin fertilizing in early spring after pruning, then every 4–6 weeks until late summer.

  • Type: Use a balanced rose fertilizer or one high in phosphorus for blooms.

  • Application: Follow package directions carefully; avoid over-fertilizing which can cause lush foliage but fewer flowers.

Protecting Roses from Pests and Disease

  • Common issues include aphids, black spot, powdery mildew, and spider mites.

  • Keep plants well-spaced and prune to improve air circulation.

  • Use organic insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils when needed.

  • Remove fallen leaves and debris promptly to reduce fungal spores.

Bonus Tips for Success

  • Mulching: Apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Winter care: Protect graft unions and roots with mulch or soil mounding. Consider rose cones or burlap wraps for sensitive varieties.

  • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
