Name: Asparagus 'Purple Passion'
Scientific Name: Asparagus officinalis 'Purple Passion'
Zone: 3–8
Look: Rich deep purple spears, thicker than green varieties with a vibrant colour.
Texture: Extra tender compared to green asparagus; very soft and less fibrous.
Flavour: Exceptionally sweet and mild, often described as nutty and less "grassy" than green types.
Disease Resistance: Good general disease resistance, though slightly less resistant to Fusarium than newer green varieties.
Grow Time: Plants require 2–3 years to mature for full harvest, with some light picking possible after the second year.
Harvest Time: Early to mid-spring; purple colour is best preserved when harvested promptly.
Special Notes: 'Purple Passion' spears lose some of their purple colour when cooked, turning greenish. Many gardeners enjoy eating them raw or lightly steamed to preserve their beautiful colour and sweet flavour. Plants will produce for many years once well established. Excellent choice for adding colour and variety to your asparagus patch!
